One of my favorite places: the Isle of Arran
The Isle of Arran
We went to the Isle of Arran with 3 French friends in October. And it is still by far my favourite place in Scotland at the moment.
The road we took from Glasgow:
- Take the train from Glasgow Central to Ardrossan Harbour.
- Take the ferry from Ardrossan Ferry Terminal to Brodick Isle of Arran Ferry.
That costs about £25.
We had planned our picnic and knew what to do once we got there thanks to the advice of a friend who had visited the previous weekend. We were very lucky as the sun was shining and the autumn colours were beautiful.
The totally wild landscape and the untouched nature really captivated me. The Isle of Arran is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, and, with an area of 432 km², the seventh largest island in Scotland. Arran is part of the unitary authority of North Ayrshire and has a population of about 5,000 (so much so that you don't step on each other).
I don't know if it was because of the time of year or if it is always the case, but there weren't many tourists and most of the time we were really alone.
We chose to do a hike that is divided in 2 parts, the first one is fairly easy to walk and lasts 3 to 4 hours depending on how long you stop to take pictures/picnicking etc... The rest of the hike is different and much more difficult. The terrain is steep and you absolutely need specific equipment (which we didn't have). So we had to turn back and enjoy everything we couldn't see when walking one way.
Then we were able to settle down in a small café and enjoy a hot chocolate while we waited for the ferry to return. The ferry trip is an excursion in itself and is very enjoyable.
I really fell in love with this island, whether it is the solitude and the silence that exists there, whether it is the landscapes, each one more grandiose than the next, or the inhabitants of infinite kindness.
I loved everything. It makes you feel very small and it's really even more enjoyable when you live in the whirlpool of life in Glasgow.
